The
Butterfly Hospice Trust, initiated at an open meeting in
2000, was well attended with speakers from the medical profession & members of the public with
experience of the lack of local in-patient beds. Its
charitable status was established in February 2001 &
as a Co. Limited by Guarantee in January 2006:
run from offices in 126 London Rd it has a retail
outlet in 17 Emery Lane, Boston and at 14/15
Station Street, Spalding.
After
over three years of searching for suitable land, a
four acre site was identified and bought: located at the
rear of
Pilgrim Hospital with access from Rowan Way, it has full
planning permission. Building
of the first 6 bed phase of hospice commenced in
September 2009.
We
have the support of local communities, the medical
profession and businesses, all committed to
providing this facility locally: continue to support
us we need each & every one of you.
What
facilities already exist in south east Lincs?
Currently St Barnabas, Macmillan
& Marie Curie cancer care supply an excellent out-patient
service coupled with care in the home, but the
closest in-patient hospice is in Lincoln
or Peterborough with
a few “end of life” beds in Skegness
& Spalding hospitals.
Dr
Martyn Walling, a well known local GP and former
trustee says
“Having
worked with local people most of my working life I appreciate the
desperate need for our own 24 hour/7 day hospice in this part of the
county. There is an in-patient hospice in Lincoln, Peterborough
& Grimsby: but even when a bed is available, travelling to
any of these is just not an option for some local people. At the
Butterfly Hospice we intend to replicate the wonderful work done by
other hospices, but we need those facilities close by & accessible
to all people across the south east Lincolnshire region.” The Trust is eager to work with all agencies to ensure
that the South East Lincolnshire communities get the best possible
choice & quality of care.
NHS
Lincolnshire has confirmed the need for up to 6 in-patient beds in the
Boston & District area although the decision where these should be
located as yet to
be decided.

Hospice
Care is one of the UK’s outstanding success stories
& is now a worldwide movement. Hospices care for the
whole person aiming to meet the physical, emotional,
social and spiritual needs of those of all ages with
any life limiting illness. An important aspect of
hospice care is that of supporting loved ones –
friends and family.
Nearly
50% of those admitted to a hospice
for pain relief/symptom control return home once their
condition is stabilised. The
average stay in a hospice is between 6 – 10 days &
then the patient can return home to spend further invaluable
time with their family.
